Local Summer Events for Seniors

Studies show that seniors who enjoy an active social life can add years to their life. While retirement residences like The Holiday have a range of planned programs to engage residents, interacting with the community at local concerts and events will keep your aging loved ones connected and make them feel good about themselves.

Musical entertainment, in particular, has a multitude of emotional, cognitive and physical benefits for the elderly. Dancing increases mobility and coordination while singing along to favorite tunes improves awareness and concentration. Most importantly, participation in a group gives them a sense of belonging and joy.

Music Concerts at Elizabeth Park Conservancy

Our residents always look forward to the summer concert series at the Elizabeth Park Conservancy in West Hartford, Connecticut. A horticultural paradise listed on the National Register of Historic places, the park earned the name “Flower of New England Parks”. The breathtaking Rose Garden Lawn, the venue of the Wednesday night concerts, is one of the oldest rose gardens in the country. People of all ages come here to enjoy the beautiful flowers, foot-tapping music and mingle with one another.

Here is an overview of the musical performances held from 6.30 pm to 8 pm. The rain date is Thursday.

  • Wednesday, August 2 – Mass-Conn-Fusion: Mass-Conn-Fusion draws its talent from both sides of the Massachusetts-Connecticut border. The group has an extensive repertoire featuring Motown, R&B, Jazz and Blues hits of the 60’s, right up to the present day.
  • Wednesday, August 9 – Mighty Soul Drivers: Known to turn every event they play at into a throbbing dance party, the Mighty Soul Drivers bring the classic Soul Sounds of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Points South to the hills of New England. They take their inspiration from the giants of Southern Soul like O.V. Wright, Percy Sledge and Otis Redding to combine that with contemporary tunes written in the classic style.
  • Wednesday, August 16 – Eight to the Bar: Drawing its musical influences from American roots music such as swing, boogie-woogie, and Motown, Eight to the Bar is known for its outstanding instrumentalists and 4-part vocal arrangements. Their rigorous touring schedule includes opening spots for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Manhattan Transfer, Robert Cray, the late Roy Orbison and Ray Charles, several European tours, and most recently, a tour of the Republic of Georgia at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy.
